Historic Sexual Offences

Both widespread media coverage and investigative operations such as Operation Hydrant, which investigated institutional abuse of vulnerable people and children has caused a sharp increase in prosecutions for sexual offences, sexual abuse and historic sexual offences case in recent years.

Allegations of any form of sexual offence or sexual abuse can be devastating on your reputation, your livelihood and your family.  At Janes Solicitors we have extensive experience of sexual offences and sexual abuse cases and we understand the trauma and sensitivity you will need as our client.  We are there to advise and support you every step of the way.

Allegations of historic sexual abuse are usually covered by the law in force at the time of the offence. This can have an impact on the length of sentence, and on how different offences are interpreted. For example, no statutory definition of consent existed until the Sexual Offences Act 2003 came into force.

There are also the historic offences of ‘buggery’ and ‘gross indecency’ which do not apply under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, but exist in the 1956 Act, which means you can still be charged with these offences in cases of historic sex abuse that took place before 2004.

One of the main problems in dealing with historic sexual offence cases is the reliability of evidence. At Janes Solicitors, we scrutinise evidence carefully and meticulously to ensure you receive the best possible defence.   We pride ourselves on our ability to dissect every detail of a case to produce a robust defence strategy and ensure the best outcome possible for our clients.
